Spetses: The Island of Bouboulina and Maritime Tradition (video)

17 June 2026 · 2 min read

Spetses is one of the most distinctive destinations in Greece, combining age-old history, aristocratic architecture and natural beauty. It is located at the entrance of the Argolic Gulf and is one of the most popular islands of the Argo-Saronic, attracting visitors from Greece and abroad throughout the year.

The special element that makes Spetses stand out is its unique atmosphere. The absence of private cars in most of the island, the traditional horse-drawn carriages, the stone-built mansions and the picturesque alleys create a setting that carries the visitor to another era.

The History of Spetses

Spetses played a significant role in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Thanks to their powerful merchant and war fleet, the inhabitants of the island contributed decisively to the struggle for independence.

Inextricably linked with the island is the figure of Laskarina Bouboulina, one of the most important personalities of Greek history. Her mansion remains to this day one of the most important attractions of the island, drawing visitors who wish to learn about her history and her contribution to the war of liberation.

The maritime tradition of Spetses is reflected in many monuments, museums and historic buildings, which keep alive the memory of the past.

Sights Worth Visiting

The heart of the island beats at the Dapia, the old harbour that is a meeting point for residents and visitors alike. There you will find cafés, restaurants and important historic buildings.

Of particular interest is the Bouboulina Museum, where personal items, documents and heirlooms of the heroine are on display.

Equally important is the Museum of Spetses, which houses exhibits that highlight the history, maritime tradition and cultural heritage of the island.

Visitors can also stroll through the Old Harbour, one of the most picturesque areas of Spetses, full of traditional caïques, sailing boats and beautiful neoclassical buildings.
