Saint John Chrysostom on fasting after the fast

26 June 2026 · 1 min read

«The fast has departed, but let reverence remain; or rather, not even the fast has departed. But do not be alarmed; for I did not say this to announce to you another Lent, but to reveal your virtue. The bodily fast has passed, but the spiritual fast has not passed. The latter is better than the former, and the former exists for the sake of the latter. Just as, when you were fasting, I used to tell you that it is possible for one who fasts not to fast, so now I say that it is possible for one to fast even without fasting. Perhaps what I am saying seems to be a riddle, but I will explain it to you: how is it possible for one who fasts not to fast? When someone abstains from foods, but does not abstain from sins. How is it possible for one who does not fast to fast? When someone partakes of food, but does not taste of sin. This fast is better than the other, and not only better, but also lighter.» BY JOHN CHRYSOSTOM,

Against the Drunkards and on the Resurrection, 1, PG 50, 433
